365 Days of Squatting

Dave Lipson is a beast.  I want to be like him.  For the next year, I will be heavy squatting every day, with the exception of rest days.  Done deal.  Today was day 1.  I PR'd at 305, but I think I could've done more.  My inflexibility is severely limiting my ability to squat heavy weights.  That needs to be addressed.

Paleo Challenge

So I've decided to take the four week paleo challenge.  For real.  I was going to start on Monday, but we ended up playing alcoholics and going to WinzUp.  So good, but so bad.  I'm going to allow myself two cheat meals per week.  Number one was Jimmy John's today because I hadn't gone to the store yet.  For dinner, I made one of Juli Bauer's recipes: Honey Dijon Pistachio Encrusted Steak with a hefty side of broccoli.  So.  Freaking.  Good.

Gon' do some more cooking tomorrow so I don't need to buy food.  Good thing about Jimmy John's being so close to BSoM is that I can always get an "unwhich."

WOD for tomorrow at CrossFit Central is 20 min AMRAP: 3 Muscle Ups, 6 Box Jumpovers (24), 9 KB Swings (2p).  I can't do muscle ups.  Good thing there's not space at the new downtown location to set them up.  By January 1 I will be doing muscle ups!

After playing alcoholics for a while yesterday, I went out and got my first tattoo.  It's a kokopelli on my right upper arm.  I want to do some sort of tribal band around it.  I've also decided that I want to get a tribal cougar on the back of my left shoulder.  Cougar is my power animal.  May he command my power!!!!

Goals

So, I was thinking about my post the other night about not being challenged by women (intellectually).  Tucker's entire relationship is based off the two of them calling each other out and one-upping the other person.  I can't see sustainability in a relationship based on insults, but they make it work.  Truthfully, I don't want a relationship like that.  I want to be with someone who makes me feel like a kid again; someone who will make me want to be a better man and who will bring out a side of me that has been hidden for years.  Though my interactions with Celeste have been brief (due mostly to the fact that she has a boyfriend and won't have drinks with me!!!!) I always find myself walking away with a smile.  Boom.  Need to make that one work...

Goals I have related to my health and fitness:
1.  Run the Austin Marathon February 17, 2013
Big Mike told me that a true athlete acknowledges his weaknesses and takes them head on.  A huge weakness of mine is running.  I hate it and I'm not very good at it.  Let's fix that.

2.  Clean and Jerk 225lbs by January 1, 2013
Biggest inhibitor there is shoulder flexibility.  Stretch stretch stretch stretch stretch...

3.  Snatch 185lbs by January 1, 2013

4.  Back Squat 315lbs by January 1, 2013
Biggest inhibitor is my lower body flexibility, specifically my calve/heel chord and hip flexibility.

5.  30 Pullups by January 1, 2013
Butterfly/kipping

6.  100 Double Unders by January 1, 2013

I really couldn't care less about my weight.  I'll never be 185lbs.  I'm a big dude, and I'm cool with that.  I just want to be cut.

Tonight

I did not get to the gym tonight :(  I did, however, prepare a week's worth of paleo foods!!!!

I spent a night of drinking beer with my heterosexual life partner, Tucker, talking about my love life.  His thoughts: I have not found a girl that can challenge me intellectually.  I've meet and crushed on a lot of smart girls, Nikki and Celeste, to name a few, but he's right.  I've never felt challenged.  That's a lie.  Nikki challenges me.  And she is beautiful, smart, successful, sincere, amazing.  We tried dating once, but I feel like she didn't think I was serious.  I certainly didn't love myself.  I'm going to try it again, and this time "I'm feeling 22."

WOD for tomorrow:  EMOM 10 min 3x135 snatch and 8 pushups, immediately followed by EMOM 10 min 2x185 jerk then 5 strict pullups.

LIfe

I'm not happy.  I hate school, except for Dr. Duke's class, which I love.  I hate stupid gen ed classes where the teacher thinks we're all majoring in their subject.  I hate how behind I've gotten because I just don't care about the bullshit assignments.  I hate myself for not being able to control what I eat all the time.  I would not eat the junk food if my roommate didn't live exclusively off of refined sugar and carbohydrates.  I hate being lazy.  I HATE not having any self confidence.

On the plus side, I fit into clothes that I haven't been able to wear in over a year.  I've lost a couple inches off my waste since starting CrossFit (again) a month ago.

So two asking-outs and no reply is a pretty sure sign that it's time to move on.

I REALLY want to meet Taylor Swift.  I'm that guy that she's been looking for.

Olive Oil

Do you remember all those movies and TV shows about the Mob?  Do you remember thinking about how it'd be possible for the Mob to monopolize an industry?  Ever think they'd take over the Olive Oil Industry?

According to an article from the Food Renegade, the majority of the "Extra Virgin" Olive Oil available in the US is cut with cheaper oil by the mob...

Your Extra-Virgin Olive Oil Is Fake

Did you know that the Mob makes money hand over fist by selling you fake olive oil? Olive oil is a $1.5 billion industry in the United States alone. According to Tom Mueller, an intrepid journalist who wrote a scandalously revealing book on the subject, 70% of the extra virgin olive oil sold is adulterated — cut with cheaper oils. Apparently, the mob’s been at it so long, that even most so-called “experts” can’t tell a real olive oil from a fake olive oil based on taste alone.
If you were a producer of one of these fake oils, 2008 was a bad year for you. That’s the year that more than 400 Italian police officers conducted a lengthy investigation dubbed “Operation Golden Oil” which led to the arrest of 23 people and the confiscation of 85 farms. It was quickly followed up by another investigation in which more than 40 additional people were arrested for for adding chlorophyll to sunflower and soybean oil and selling it as extra virgin olive oil, both in Italy and abroad.
The prevalence of these and other similar raids actually prompted the Australian government’s standards agency to allow olive oil brands to voluntarily submit their oils for lab tests. These authentication tests allow oils to be certified pure “extra-virgin olive oil.” Thus far in 2012, every imported brand of extra-virgin olive oil has failed the test to gain certification!
Last year, researchers at UC Davis tested 124 different samples from eight major brands of extra-virgin olive oil. More than seventy percent of the imported oils failed.
After reading these news stories last year, I was utterly intrigued when Tom Mueller’s tell all book finally came out. It took me months to get around to reading it, but when I did I couldn’t put the page-turner down. And the evidence? The evidence is damning.
In Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil, Mr. Mueller exposes the inner workings of the olive oil industry, which has fallen prey to hi-tech, industry-wide fraud.
Authentic extra-virgin olive oil, he says, takes a lot of time, expense, and labor to make. On the flip side, it’s quick, cheap, and easy to doctor it.
The most common form of adulteration comes from mixing extra virgin olive oil with cheaper, lower-grade oils. Sometimes, it’s an oil from an altogether different source — like canola oil or colza oil. Other times, they blend extra virgin olive oil with a poorer quality olive oil. The blended oil is then chemically deodorized, colored, and possibly even flavored and sold as “extra-virgin” oil to a producer. In other words, if you find a major brand name olive oil is fake, it probably isn’t the brand’s fault. Rather, it’s their supplier’s.
Mueller’s book is deeply engaging, reading like a typical suspense novel or crime drama rather than a news story. His engrossing way with words sucks you in from page one and doesn’t let you go until you reach the back cover.
If you want the full, gripping, true story behind the olive oil racketeering, I highly recommend you buy and read Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil.

Crazy Fran Day

Yesderday was Crazy Fran Day at CrossFit Evergreen.  21-15-9  95 lb Thrusters, Burpees, Pullups.  My Fran times these days is down around 7 minutes, but the burpees killed me.  I ended with 14:58.  Not great, but it was extremely exhausting.  The Coach helped me with my kipping pullups after.  I wish it would have been before!  They're so much easier.

I've changed my mind about this blog.  I'm not going to detail all of my meals and such.  I will still post lifting stats and progress photos, but I really want this to be somewhat of a paleo guide.  Great recipes, interesting articles, and all-around useful information WILL be posted.
